Storing power with lithium batteries
When it comes to running all the power-hungry comforts of home, lead acid battery systems just won’t cut it. From your air conditioner to your washing machine, or even just your microwave-you’re going to need a little more grunt. While the initial cost outlay is higher, lithium caravan batteries will change the way you look at off-grid power.
Lithium Ion (LiFePO4) batteries (compared to traditional lead acid):
- Weigh 60% less
- Output 30% more power
- Charge quicker
- Have a longer lifespan (15 years)
Get more power with Lithium-Ion Batteries
Traditional lead acid batteries are pretty inefficient, every time they’re depleted, their life span diminishes.
LiFePO4 Lithium batteries, on the other hand, are far more suited to complete* charge and depletion cycles. While you should still operate them between 20% and 80% total charge for maximum longevity, completely draining them won’t write them off.
What’s more, lithium caravan batteries will keep cranking out great voltage all the way to the end. Even on the last of their charge, they’ll keep those beers icy cold and the veggies fresh.
*Lithium batteries have some pretty serious advantages over lead acid when it comes to charge levels. But they should still never be completely discharged. A correctly designed and installed power system will include safeguards to prevent this.
Lead acid batteries are heavy, and the more weight budget you spend on them the less you have for everything else. With the typical payload of a family size van being somewhere around 800kg, all of a sudden 50kg’s on battery power is a huge investment. That’s nearly a full set of spare wheels and tyres, 50 litres of fuel or water, or more than a hundred cans of your favourite brew!
Lithium batteries designed for caravan power systems are significantly lighter. Compared to lead acid systems of the same equivalent power output (factoring in efficiency as well as raw amp hours) li-ion batteries are 60% lighter!
Done right, Lithium Caravan Batteries are safer, last longer and are better than lead acid in every way. The downside to caravan lithium batteries? They take a little bit more to get right than lead acid batteries. Your traditional power system is designed for lead acid, and it’s not quite as simple as plug and play.
To get the most from a lithium battery set up, save money in the long run and keep your van safe, you need to do it right.
Installation is best done by an experienced professional with the attention to detail, level of care and experience to make sure it’s spot-on the first time.
Here at RV Solutions, that’s exactly what we do.
